High ISO shooting with Canon 5D mk2, on the limits.

It's not often I am hovering on the comfortable limits with a Canon 5D mk2, at the weekend I was in real mixed low light soup.

Ambient light trickled into the scene carrying with it a red gel effect, mixed with this delight was a tungsten and a flash combo as required, yep this was a real yummy mix.

To capture the ambient dragging the shutter was order of the day. Shutter speeds on this occasion were as low as I generally go with a few shots at 1/4 sec and 1/6 sec hand held, burst shooting was the most sensible option as the miss rate did have the potential to be quite high.

Nothing is a given, and at times even experienced photographers will get thrown for a few frames, light can play some crazy tricks on you.

What the eye see's and the camera produces isn't always similar.

Using the high ISO setting camera side the recycle rate on the small flash was pretty much instant, the Canon 580EX II flash was not having to work too hard as I was shooting a wide aperture high ISO combo.

Protecting the delicate ambient that came from various sources was important, over powering this with flash produces images for me that are less interesting, so proximity to the subject was important.

Back to this low light soup shoot, knowing the best places to work were key to keeping control on the main subject, in terms of exposure and colour casts.

The battery's used in the Canon flash for this job were rechargeable Duracell, they haven't let me down on a shoot yet.

Anna-Mi Fredriksson performs at SHUNT, London.

These two dance videos are from 2010, they were previously hosted on my own web site, I finally transferred them to YouTube this week.

Anna-Mi Fredriksson  an ex dancer for the English National Ballet.

Anna opened the evening at SHUNT with the top performance.

We had time before the night got underway to do a lighting run through. This was to get the setup both lighting and camera locked down. A few adjustments to the original back light setup and all was good to go. Happy days.

The material falling from the ceiling is salt.

Now despite good plans and arriving early I only got chance to see this location  just before the venue opened, this setup was untested, it simply had to work, under pressure, only one run to go at, nothing new there.

Different light situations bring different challenges, low light can spell disaster for older or lower spec video equipment.

Canon 5D easily coping with this situation.

Anna's closing performance (short edit) is below.

Photography Training : Visual Push ups.

Photography Training never ends, retraining and life learning are words most of us will be familiar with.

From time to time I do some street photography, visual pushups.

In the pursuit to become more specialised it is also possible to become somewhat stale and as time moves on and fashion dictates become dated.

Maybe last season look stayed there and this years new look is already here.

Visual pushups isn't about keeping up with trends more about some relaxed time venturing where your work maybe doesn't take you on a daily basis.

It was while out with one of my photographers last year we decided to make time to do some street photography.

I think we were maxed out with studio work at the time.

This image unfolded in front of me as I turned a corner.

Try it.

The Mend on Britain's Got Talent BGT.

The Mend have been great to watch on Britain's Got Talent BGT.

Originally put together by none of than Nigel Martin Smith, who was the mastermind behind non other than Take That.

Time passes quickly and it seem's only like yesterday I recorded the lads doing their first live on stage performance.

At the time the lads sounded and looked the part.

Dubfire at Sankeys.

Asked to cover the visit to Manchester by uber talent Dubfire to the venue voted Worlds finest Club Sankey's, my original plan was to capture a number of promotional shots.

Dubfire is the stage name for Ali Shirazinia, he left the comforts of a storied career as one-half of Grammy-winning duo Deep Dish in order to pursue new life as a producer.

Deep Dish are well known for providing house or dance remixes of tracks of famous stars such as Madonna, Cher and Gabrielle

When the Dubfire set started the atmosphere and the performance was really one not to be missed, so i captured it in a series of photographs.

The video has been made from some 1,500 photographs taken over the 3 1/2 hour set, they haven't been modified and almost entirely dropped in the timeline in the order taken.

The experience at Sankey's was an audio visual treat for all the Dubfire fans and Sankeys faithful that were in attendance, for those who missed it...

turn the lights off, turn your speakers up, press play.

Manchester Riots, 9th August 2011.

Manchester Riots, who can forget the spiraling events of 2011 that originally brought chaos and destruction to London.

It was Tuesday 9th August 2011

The footage you can see at the link below shows the devastation to shops and business in this area.

To get the footage and photographs I ventured through the areas capturing what I could just as the riots peaked and the crows moved on.

This is my video detailing the Aftermath, mostly from photographs showing the damage and looting captured with the Canon 5dMK2.
