Photographing New models.

Photographing new models for personal or agency profiles is one of the areas most fashion photographers have done at some point in their careers.

New models heavily rely on input or sometimes the complete lack of it. 

In my video blog 2 How to photograph dancers this is covered to a degree.

A few years ago I noticed the client relaxed more when I asked the Make-Up Artist (MUA) to check over the detail, this was used to my advantage, asking the MUA at my prompt to just go over the client and generally fuss a bit.

We made some great frames, the moments just after the "tampering" the expressions were natural. These moments are honest and in my opinion capture the true essence of the moment.

My philosophy is “Less is More” and thus, I generally give the models Carte Blanche to freestyle. Of course if they are totally ridged, that is where I attempt to guide them, not by strict posses, but by attempting to introduce an emotion in them that can hopefully be captured by me in a good frame.

Always agree a briefing before the shoot and let things go where they may, as long as they fulfill the original objective.

Lucien Laviscount single Dance with You has just been released, he is a recording artist and actor.

Lucien is set to release his debut single 'Dance With You' with US Hip-Hop aritst Mann.

All shoots are different, this shoot was a breeze, and great fun, he walked in we grabbed a few frames he liked a lot so we got on with it and made a heap more.

If only all shoots were that easy

I have worked with Stuart as a fitness model for a number of years, during this time he has graced Men's Health cover, featured in other Men's magazines and fitness videos.

The video is a quick sample of the type of images produced in the studio and at a gym.

London Fashion Week Debut then some.

Straight off their debut at London Fashion Week label JEREMPAUL had secured meetings with buyers in London.

For those not familiar with the brand designer Khulekani Msweli won the FDC Avant-Garde Designer of the Year Award, a testament and acknowledgement of his quirky surrealist-inspired creations, this young talent has been tipped to take the couture fashion world by storm.

The seasons look book I was to shoot consisted of around 24 pieces.

At short noticed I was asked to produce their look book, having just returned from their show we quickly arranged the shoot in Manchester.

At the same time we produced some small vidoe files for each outfit that could easily be placed in any website as an individual item or as a whole for the collection.

The example below is one of the video's produced for JEREMPAUL, produced to work with the look book.

Two jobs in one session.

The individual files are small, around 1mb in size.

Short deadline, multiple media, all in a days work.

In April this year I did portfolio work for Khasan Brailsford, he is a professional dancer based in LA.

At that time he was in Manchester on a world tour with Kylie Minogue.

We had only a few hours to make a studio and location shoot, I have to say the amount of outfits they brought was erm impressive.

Lucien Laviscount photographed in my studio a few months ago.

He is appearing in the returned Celebrity Big Brother.

He is a really professional and a nice guy. Making a great impression from walking in to on set.

We just got on with making photo's straight away, he is so easy to work with and open to ideas.

This combination made for a quick and productive shoot.

Not sure how long Celeb BB is going to be on TV this year but I wish him well, sure the British public will love him.

Last week I worked with Khasan Brailsford, he is a professional dancer from LA, he is in Manchester on tour with Kylie Minogue and other associated artists

The first time together I shot a dance workshop at Manchester's Sunshine Studios, our second meet was for his personal portfolio work together with his friend and fellow dancer Tre Holloway, we used my loft studio as a base but also shot in and around the city.
